I think TLI has some simplified materials. Since you're in Taiwan, though, you should just learn traditional characters for a while. When you go back to China, I'm sure you'll adapt quickly. I didn't find it too tough.

I think the most important thing is to just keep pushing forward.

Hi Mark,

I know this is an old post, but I'm currently getting to know your website better in the hopes that it will answer some questions for me. That said, perhaps you can give me some suggestions as your blog is HUGE (and totally awesome, if I might add)!

What do students do when they've started their language learning in China and want to continue in Taiwan?
I studied for two and a half years in China and I learned reading and writing skills in simplified characters. I came to Taiwan a year ago, and had to start teaching myself traditional characters. It's frustrating. I feel a little down about it and to be honest, it has been a factor in putting me off language learning this year. Now I have the time to devote to language learning again and I'm ready to get started.

I know I've hit on a hot topic here, but there doesn't seem to be any general concensus, which is why I'm confused.

Are there any schools here that might include both in their curriculum? Do you or any of your friends have any suggestions for how I can proceed with my language learning? I plan on reducing my teaching load to five days and studying part-time.

Thanks. I think I've been through most of your posts but I might have missed something. If you've already answered or gone over these topics in detail, perhaps you could just point me in the right direction?

Yeah, you'd better pray. My and my ESL posse are gonna be waiting in the alleys by your apartment. And we'll each be packing a heavy TOEFL prep book or two, ready to put the smack down anyone who doesn't know what "extemporaneous" means.
