Funny that anyone would approach an ESL class for beginners in any other way than the method you outlined above. Translation into the mother tounge of words and concepts not easily demonstrated phsically i.e. Stand up, sit down is necessary for all ss starting after their 1st language, or languages in the Taiwanese case are fully entrenched...about five or six years old.

Our school here in Kaoshiung teaches A B C D E letters and sounds, sit down, stand up, My name is ____. everyone, Hello, Apple, Bed, dog, egg and goodbye...in the first 2hrs of a b1 (beginners) class...it is more than enough it takes us 24 hours of class to get through the alphabet...course we are also spending lots of time on words and beginner dialouge.

I agree with you that true beginners should be allowed to speak their native language and that it is very beneficial to have explanations made in the native language. However once they reach a certain point scaffolding away the native language support is important.

I like your control technique and clearly it works very well with children..
