I’m in Time Magazine!
August 26th, 2006 by MarkToday, I was shocked to hear my friend Nathan tell me my picture was in this month’s issue of Time magazine.
I could barely believe it, so I picked up a copy to see just what picture they’d used. I’m not the main focus of the article, but it’s probably going to be a long time before my picture’s in Time again… so this goes up on the blog!

Darin, the amazing thing is it’s a picture from three years ago and I didn’t even realize it was out there.
Geek, I’m the guy on the left.

@Mike: Way ahead of you, dude. I already made my debut there decades ago.
@smokey: That was my old class at Shida’s language center. The picture’s from three years ago, and I have no idea why Time picked that one.

Prince Roy, I haven’t started classes yet. I remember the people in that photo well. The two next to me (whose backs were to the camera) were south east Asians. They didn’t talk to me much, but they were friendly. The German guy, the bald one with blond hair, always used to ask extremely detailed questions any time we learned a new grammatical pattern, the guy way on the right was a Jewish guy who was very patient about listening to the teacher tell all of us “how Jewish people are”, the Japanese guy with dyed hair next to him is still a good friend of mine, the the Malaysian dude with the shaved head was a Buddhist monk who had decided to come here after finding out how much religious studies were stifled in Beijing, the gal next to him was a huaqiao who was a pretty motivated student.
I will never forget that teacher. She was unique! She was a bit quirky, and she’d been at the school since before the days of Gao Wei Li, but she was dedicated.

That must have been around the time I was there. I was in a class with the German guy. He was much more serious than me. I recognise some of the others too, like the guy sitting next to him.
