Nooooooooooooooo!

October 21st, 2006 by Mark

It looks like the prediction I made last week when Google acquired YouTube is right. The gravy train of free music, videos, and TV snippets at YouTube just might be ending. According to Ars Technica, YouTube just purged over 30,000 videos. This really, really sucks.

Is the gravy train over? (iDrone.net)
And so it begins… (ars technica)

To be honest, I am awfully impressed with your ability to write so well in Chinese. :) Way to go Mark! Looking forward to reading more of them.

The gravy-train is not over, IMO. Google knows what it’s doing. How do people get paid for the clips they produce in the first place? Oh, that’s right, through advertising. What does Google do better than anyone else on the internet? Oh, that’s right, make money through advertising. The analogy between YouTube and Napster is false: musicians make money selling their product to the consumer, whereas TV shows make money selling time slots to advertizers; the two mediums are also enjoyed in vastly different fashions, music being consumed over and over again, and TV shows being consumed usually just once. In reality, video-clip producers could probably make MORE money from advertizers through something like YouTube, and advertizers would likewise receive a better return on their investment due to the obvious benefits of the internet. I think buying up YouTube might eventually turn out to be a master-stroke on Google’s part. Of course, if they don’t handle the legal issues right, it could turn ugly, but I have confidence that Google will be able to find a good model that works to everyone’s benefit.

Bad move on comedy central’s part. They are going to lose a ton of publicity and viral marketing due to this decision.
