Is it possible to make more than 100 USD per hour teaching at cram schools, especially TOEFL classes? Someone told me that it was.

This is interesting. I'm definitely going to try it here in Dalian. The marketing bit is useful, and not to be underestimated. I spend my first few weeks here putting the word out that I wanted to tutor, and suddenly things started coming in all at once.

demanding pay for a lesson cancelled within 24 hours, but I suspect that’s hard to actually pull off. One solution is just to take on more lessons than you need, and know that a one or two each week won’t happen. Another that works well, is to ask students to promise you one lesson a week.

Haha,Yes,it's very difficult for Taiwanese to follow the rules. The most important thing is they don't read the books:novels, magazines, and even English websites.
You have to teach them to do English thinking, or they just waste their money.

I think all your advice is excellent. I offer to meet students for a free consultation before starting private lessons. This gives me a chance to ascertain their level, find a suitable time, discuss their learning goals, what materials to use, etc.

This is really interesting, Daniel. It's as if we've lived in two completely different Taiwans. I don't think I've ever had any students that I could even dream of teaching such advanced topics. I don't think any of my students, or even their parents could follow any real lesson about history or economics in English. They all start as near-beginners, and by the time they get to that level, they're getting too busy with high school entrance tests and preparation to continue their buxiban classes.

I have to agree that teaching from the Economist sounds a heck of a lot more interesting than teaching kids who start as near beginners. It's great to see them improve over the months, but it's not the most exciting thing in the world on a day to day basis.
