World Cup Blogging Beijinger Racks up 10 Million Hits

June 18th, 2006 by Mark

According to the Washington Post, via Reuters, a Beijing Blogger has already racked up 10 million hits on his podcast blog.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing blogger and podcaster Dong Lu registered his 10 millionth hit on Friday morning, racing to the landmark on the back of China’s obsession with the World Cup.

The 36-year-old’s irreverent take on soccer’s showpiece, produced with the help of three friends in the living room of his apartment on the northeast outskirts of Beijing, has proved hugely popular with China’s on-line audience.

Sporting a multi-colored Afro wig and a fake mustache, Dong presents a podcast every other day featuring caricatures of leading players, parodies of the many soccer-themed adverts on Chinese television and the occasional song.

Wow. I’m not even sure if there were 10 million World Cup related hits racked up on any web site in China last time. This is definitely very cool. Well, at least for some of us.

Update: Way to go against Italy, US!! With this tie, we need to beat Ghana to advance.

I think Italy were let down big time by De Rossi, that elbow was vicious and he even pleaded his innocence on the field after he was red carded. Italy clearly had the classier team, but as has happened a lot in recent history they got bogged down and couldn’t keep their emotions in check. America played very well, especially the first 20-30 mins or so. They were energetic and set up some decent chances. They aren’t really clinical enough in the final third of the pitch though. Look at Italy, they get pushed back a lot at the start of the game, then had one good chance and scored. When the US are like that as well they can do even better. Dont get me wrong, the US team has come a long way. They weren’t anywhere in football terms before the 1994 world cup, and in the last ten years or so have vastly improved. The next game against Ghana isn’t gonna be easy, Ghana are a good team with some good players. They are fast and powerful, if sometimes a little naive in defence. Should be an interesting game!! And of course I have to say “come on England”; we will steadily improve as the tournament goes on :)

Is the (Reuters) right at the beginning of the block-quote insufficient attribution? In any case, I added “via Reuters” right after my link to the Washington Post article.
