Actually, there is a <a href="http://toshuo.com/2007/the-disadvantage-of-having-a-cast-iron-gut-and-being-kinda-dumb/" rel="nofollow">story behind this post</a>, but someone else was the victim.

Keeping cut fruit from the nightmarket overnight? Are you crazed? No wonder you're making more runs to the bathroom than Wang Chien-ming around the diamond all season.

That's really creepy. Those fruits weren't cut, though.

Frankly, this depends so much on the fruit (as well as what zhongtang pointed out, the state of the fruit) that the poll is pretty meaningless. Strawberries will get furry on you the next day. You can keep jumbo fruits for another day. Oranges stay good for many more days. You'll want to keep pineapple around for a few days in order for them to become more succulent, and out of the fridge at that. The king of endurance when it comes to fruit is the pomelo, often delectable after weeks of just lying around.

By the way, remember one time when you came over to my place with a bag of apples and oranges from wellcome? I stuck the apples in the fridge and forgot all about it for a month or two. They still looked exactly the same when I realized that they're there. I ate one...a little lacking in crispness, but otherwise fine in terms of what I expect from a supermarket apple. But it creeped me out because it had been such a long time. I then set the bag out in my fruit bowl so that I would remember to take it out to the trash next day, but of course I kept forgetting about it. So now it sat in the fruit bowl for another two weeks, getting a little bit leathery around the stem end, but otherwise not degrading in any visible way. They were like the dorian greys of apples. Creepy.

Pre-cut fruit is usually better on the same day, otherwise the open flesh of the fruit might just start to rot slowly. You could probably wait 2-3 days, but would need to peel off the exposed part of the fruit. Pre-cut apples usually turn brownish quite rapidly, which is not really tasteful in my opinion.
