Nifty Little Boxes For All

February 10th, 2007 by Mark

Now that I’m on vacation it’s time to mess around with my site! Unwilling to be restrained by the adequate blogroll feature built into Wordpress, I’ve broken free of it’s constraints! Instead of the built in system, I just put all of my links into a separate .php file. Then, I added a PHP include to my sidebar and voila! No more silly little limits about what information I can put into my blogroll. Oh, how I love extensible pieces of software!

For now, I’ve added nifty little boxes next to the names of everyone who uses either del.icio.us or Zooomr. As one might expect, clicking on a next to a name will take you to that person’s Zooomr photos, while clicking on a will take you to that person’s del.icio.us bookmarks.

I’ve also added two more bloggers to my “Taiwan Friends” list. I haven’t actually met either of them, but I’d like to. The first is Gem, a vlogger and avid photographer, and the second is Range, also an avid photographer, and who somehow managed to pump out a hundred posts last month.

That is nifty. I may have to get a delicious account just for the neat little box. No Flickr support I guess?

Nah, I abandoned Flickr a year ago. They’ve managed to copy some of Zooomr’s nicer features such as AJAX-powered editing of photo info and geotagging, but they’re still lacking in a lot of ways. I’m a fervent Zooomeur.

Granted, I’m not suggesting that you switch to Flickr yourself, but wouldn’t it be useful to put a flickr box next to the blogroll sites? I mean, I appreciate that you like Zooomr, and if there was a convenient switching tool I might consider switching myself, but you can’t deny that many people still use Flickr, and that information might be seen as useful on the blogroll.

I got a del.icio.us account, btw. Not much in it yet.

I’m afraid it would go against the spirit of my blog to taint it with an icon of anything but the uberest of the uber-geek services. If it makes you feel any better though, Yahoo Albums is used by far more people than Flickr and Zooomr combined, and I won’t be making icons for it, either. The same goes for Photobucket and Wretch.

You could always create a Zooomr account and just upload a single photo to it. Bloggers get free pro accounts, and then you’ll have both nifty little boxes next to your name on my blogroll.

Zooomr rocks, I totally agree. I have a flickr account, but barely use it. I use my Zooomr account everyday.

My wife just asked me when we are going to meet Mark, I told her as soon as we move to Taipei after Chinese new year. I’m looking forward to it, we have had some interesting discussions. I am in the process of updating my blogroll as well.

    100 posts…
That was a real challenge, towards the end, I entered a somewhat zen type of state of mind.

What do you do, when there’s nothing left to write about?

I now have a Zooomr account, and put up a few pictures. Can’t find any help sections though or any FAQ. The interface seems much too busy and distracts from the actual photos. Otherwise it seems fine.

    ok, I’m in. I want a del.icio.us box too.
