Reddit isn’t a news site anymore
March 5th, 2008 by MarkOh, how the mighty have fallen. And to think, I used to consider Reddit a place for enlightened, rational discussion.
I’ve replaced Reddit’s former position on my blogroll with Y-combinator’s Hacker News.

Haven’t been on reddit in ages. Ever since they sold out to Condé Nast (I believe), I didn’t really think that it was relevant. Same thing goes for Newsvine (purchased by MSNBC).

It’s been in a sorry state for a while. When I first found it in 2005, though, it was a treasure trove of interesting, insightful articles and commentary. More recently, redditors supplied quite a bit of commentary on my piece on coin tossing probabilities. Some even wrote code to solve the problem.
It was great before, and the sub-reddits are still so-so, but it’s time to move on.

I agree with you but have found that by using 2 greasemonkey scripts “Reddit Content Filter” and “Reddit Filter” that the site is still OK for me to check every day.

I saw the recent article about the guy who quit reddit and followed suit. Freed up quite a bit of time which is now being used to learn Korean. It’s funny because I saw it going downhill but I refused to admit it. I realize there was a time when I would save useful articles and was actually glad I visited reddit on a particular day or I would’ve missed out. Late in 2007 and early 2008, I was visiting not because I was looking forward to it but more because it had become a habit.
