I’m afraid I can’t really offer any useful advice, v. I’ve never done anything like what you’re talking about and I don’t know anyone else who has, either. It seems like it should be doable, but I don’t have any suggestions. Maybe you could ask on forumosa.

my idea is to hook up a webcam and use skype to tutor her an hour a day from the US. my 8 pm would be her 8am- something like that. i would like her to buy a dvd/textbook course with traditional chinese translation (at least in the textbooks) that she could immerse herself in for at least 3 hours a day, and then use the 4th hour for an exchange with me where i could be asking her informational and yes/no question about the text content. i could use a small whiteboard as well.

my first question is: are you familiar with a high quality dvd/textbook with translation English-learner program sold in taiwan? if so, what is the title and where is it sold? i’m thinking if this skype exchange goes well, it could turn into a summer time way for me to make some extra money when i’m not teaching public school. so my second question is, do you think teaching taiwan students via skype is a viable idea? the advantages are that i speak good chinese and can explain grammar and vocab all in chinese where needed, i have years of experience in TEFL, and learning from home has advantages for the chinese student in terms of savings in time, transportation costs, parents feeling more secure knowing where their child is and what they are doing, savings passed on to the student because of no overhead costs on my end, etc. if you think the idea is viable, how much would be fair to charge for a one on one exchange per hour? i would really appreciate your input. -v
