[...] The Taiwan Blog Feed. Old-timers will remember that once upon a time there was a thing called the Living in China Aggregator. It enjoyed quite a bit of popularity in its day (before Living in China was engulfed in the fires of its own greed). Hopefully this aggregator will have a better fate. Maybe it is better to limit the focus to a smaller region such as Taiwan. It’s run by Mark of Tushuo.com (the guy that made the cool Chinese Number Tool). Check it out. [...]

[...] Back in the day, I was a C programmer, and then a Perl programmer, later. Amazingly, despite working at a tech start-up that was related to the internet, I never used a shred of JavaScript in those days. At first, we did all of our web programming with Perl/CGI and later, management became downright obsessed with Java. Despite this background, despite “not knowing” any Javascript, I had no problems banging out a tone tool for adding tone marks to romanized Mandarin words, a tone tool for adding tone marks to romanized Cantonese words, and a tool for converting Chinese numbers into Arabic numbers. The first two tools took me about an hour each, and the last took an hour initially and then a dozen or so 10 minute additions. Based on what I’ve seen googling for similar tools, all three of my tools are superior to all other similar tools online. I realize that by saying this, I’m virtually ensuring that some punk churns out a better version of each by morning; but that’s okay. The inelegance of my (very kludgy) code isn’t the point. [...]
