I just finished editing my interview with Shannon Kennedy for Lingsprout. Unlike my last few interviews which were focused tutorials, this one was just a story. It’s not that she wouldn’t have something great to teach. She does and she teaches it on her site Eurolinguiste, but her story is just epic.

As a music student, she had some language learning requirements and just took them really seriously. She simultaneously learned multiple languages to a B level (which is European for “intermediate/able to get by”), and then went on to take on other languages such as Mandarin that aren’t even required of classical musicians.

This Chinese mother’s ability to block out her son is nothing short of jaw-dropping.

This, from the BBC:

Mr Rudd will focus on education, environment and the economy
Australia’s Prime Minister-elect, Kevin Rudd, has announced the make-up of his new Labor government.

He appointed Julia Gillard as deputy PM and education minister, and a former rock star, Midnight Oil singer Peter Garrett, as environment minister.

Penny Wong becomes the country’s first Asian-born minister, with responsibility for climate change.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Party has elected a new leader to replace John Howard, defeated in last week’s vote.

That guy, the singer, Peter Garrett, has been chosen to be Australia’s new Environment Minister.

I just got home from the Muddy Basin Rambler’s CD party.

It was pretty fun. I met up with old friends, like Eli “the fraud”, Michael “blogs at the speed of thought” Turton, Angelica “the battlepanda“, Wayne, and Franc. Other bloggers, I hadn’t met before, such as Robert “the red” and Patrick Cowsill were out in force to support TC, David and the rest of the band, too! Meeting them was great, and I even got a chance to catch up with David Reid, who made it up from Xindian to visit. All in all it was a pretty enjoyable evening. The acoustics were definitely lacking, but I think the band did pretty well for themselves.

Franc brought me a very interesting gift from his visit to northern China— North Korean money! I’d never seen it before, and I probably never would have if not for his generosity. It looks very… uh… communist. Photos will be up soon.

I love it when other teachers put up videos of their students. This school is obviously quite a bit different than mine is, but the kids sure are cute.

Here’s the final performance. The costumes sure were involved, but they didn’t have real hammer pants like I’d never admit to having wanted when I was 12.

I don’t even know what to make of this. Some guy who sells cell phones for a living showed up on Britain’s got Talent, saying he wants to be an opera singer. The audition didn’t go at all like I thought it would:

Update: Paul Potts has won the semi-final!

I went to KFC with a buddy today. Their new 雞肉捲’s not too bad, BTW. Anyway, we heard the new Chinese cover of Madonna’s Material Girl, 拜金女郎. The Chinese version’s catchier, somehow. .. especially the part where it goes “yīnwèi wŏ zhīīīīīīīīīdào zhè shìjiè luànqībāzāo!” Today, I heard the song at this site. After that link dies, you can just find the song on Baidu. On the mainland the name has been changed to 拜金女孩.

The backdorm boys have released another video, and here it is. Tian took his copy down, so I linked to a different one.

In this video, the 後舍男生 (The Backdorm Boys) cover a song called 不得不愛, or “Irresistible Love”. I’ve been hearing it quite a bit on the radio recently, especially when riding in cabs. 黄艺馨, the guy on the left, puts on a performance sure to give even mildly homophobic viewers the creeps. Still, it was a well done cover. I’ve written about the Back Dorm Boys before.

Back when I was in college, my friends who didn’t like the Backstreet Boys always (basically all of the guys) called them the “Backdoor Boys”. Well, here’s a mockery of them gone too far… Allow me to introduce 后舍男生 (hòu shè nán shēng) or, the “Backdorm Boys”. Be sure to notice the poor “ood roommate out” trying to use his computer in peace at the back.

This is the funniest one I saw.

Here’s another:

And yes, they sing in Chinese too:

This one has sort of a Chinese Marlon Brando thing going…

Enjoy!

If you want to see more, Tian’s got it at his site.
